KJELLBERG CABIN & BOAT GARAGE
TWO INLETS LAKE
PARK RAPIDS, MN
In 2017 the Kjellbergs approached HjS Architecture with a request to assess their existing cabin and property on Two Inlets Lake in Park Rapids, Minnesota and design a new cabin and boat garage that incorporated Usonian design principles and a material palette that complimented their heavily wooded lake-shore. In 2018 we worked with close friend and builder Emcon Construction to demolish and replace the existing boat garage, and in spring 2019 they will demolish most of the existing cabin and construct a new cabin utilizing the existing foundation.
Surrounded by the boughs of white pine, spruce, cedar and oak trees, the low sloped roofs and deep overhangs compliment a varied siding patter with dark grey finishes to integrate the structures into the landscape. Soffits of finished cedar add a splash of warmth and security at the buildings perimeter while reinforcing their place in the natural environment. Security and a sense of mystery meet the visitor upon arrival with minimal glazing and a recessed entry, while the west facing lake side of the cabin opens up to expansive walls of glazing and a screened porch that reaches out towards the water and the sunset.
